- I am sitting here in my hotel room looking at the Denver skyline through my window. I haven't been back to Denver since
I visited here one summer in 1984. I came from Arizona to spend the summer here with my older sister who was working in
Denver. I was only 17 years old, but wanted to get out of the house. I wanted to find a job for the summer and ended up
working at Mercy Farms Restaurant in downtown Denver. I loved working there! I was a prep cook and helped make
sandwiches, serve side dishes, etc. during the lunch rush. I still have a pottery cup I bought there and brought back
to AZ with me. I loved the people working there. Although I was not religious of any sort, they were all so kind and
really took me under their wing. No one pushed their religious beliefs on me. I remember one beautiful woman who had
been with Pastor Jim since the beginning - she often laughed about the time when they only had potatoes to eat. She
definitely had seniority and was the first person the customer met on the lunch line.
I was invited to visit the farm one time for a weekend. I remember sleeping in a bed of my own in a room with many other beds with single women. I thought it was very odd, but was intrigued. The next day we had a huge picnic and went swimming in the pool. I think it was Pastor Jim's birthday. I remember I had to borrow a 1 piece bathing suit because I couldn't wear my 2 piece. "Pastor Jim didn't approve," I was told. I thought it was a little strange that everyone followed all of these rules that this man said they should. But, I could also feel the amazing feeling of family that was present.
During the picnic, Pastor Jim was given a new cadillac for his Birthday. I was told they tried to give it to him last year, but he refused. This year, however, he accepted it.
I was intrigued by the love and devotion everyone there had for this man.
I was so touched by everyone's caring character.
When I left Denver to finish my senior year at high school, I cried and cried. I was going to dearly miss these wonderful ladies who had been so caring to me. I also knew that I would most likely never see them again.
Here it is 30 years later and I still think about my experience with Mercy Farm. I wanted to see if the restaurant was still there, so looked it up on the internet. What I found was this blog site. Wow, how amazing.
To everyone who I came to know during by brief stay, please know that your kindness has stayed with me over all of these years.
